On the verge of going undefeated in Saturday's Ohio Spring Volleyball Tournament, the Bobcats were tied 27-27 in their second game of the day against the Findlay Oilers, a situation that would test the resolve of the Ohio volleyball team.
A three-point run to win the game and match proved that the Bobcats were up to the challenge.
With a large number of freshmen on the court at the crucial point of the game, coach Geoff Carlston said he wanted to see how they would respond to the challenge.
(Graduate Assistant Coach) Don (Gromala) and I wanted to see how they came out of it
he said. I like that they won and Findlay is a good team. They could have easily lost that match but that's learning. They learn 'How do we find a way to win this?' It wasn't always pretty
but they found a way to win against a pretty good team. With a group of five freshmen
I'm pretty happy with that.
We put in a lineup there that is a different lineup. We put in five freshmen, and that isn't exactly what we want to be doing. But the learning has to happen now; we don't want that happening in the fall.
Prior to defeating Findlay
Ohio swept West Virginia State and Charleston for a perfect 6-0 game record on the day.
This tournament we played a lot more consistently than we have, and each weekend we're getting a lot better as we go on, outside hitter Stephanie Blackburn said.
Libero Michaele Blackburn echoed her teammate and sister's assessment of the Bobcats' performance and said there are still strides the team needs to make to continue improving.
This weekend was a lot better. We were more in a flow, we ran our tempo more and it was definitely better than the past two weekends, she said. We need to obviously work on technical stuff, but mainly we need to find our team chemistry and find how we're going to work together and come together as a team.
