With the coming of spring, Ohio University students should stop to smell the roses ' that is if they aren't overwhelmed with the stench of garbage strewn about by some careless fellow Athenians.
Tomorrow is Earth Day ' a time for all to pitch in and help clean up our act around the city and our campus. In order for this day to be a success, it would speak volumes for students to exhibit their OU pride by respecting the beautiful campus we are fortunate enough to enjoy. Planning by student organizations to contribute to the effort this year has been commendable and should peak interest from students to contribute.
And certainly, 'tis the season for student organizations to reinforce environmental awareness, and many have been gone above and beyond in doing so. Recyclemania ended only a couple weeks ago, and next Saturday the Ohio Men's Club Water Polo Team will sponsor Athens Beautification Day. This year there is no excuse to not contribute to these days dedicated to making Athens cleaner and more enjoyable for everyone. Even if it is just tidying your own little slice of Athens, any effort helps.
However, not all students likely would want to spend their day cleaning. In anticipation, there are lots of other events planned for the day. A composting workshop, speakers on the environment and the 15th Annual Earth Ball at the Blue Gator are sure to bring awareness ' if not action to the cause.
So on the few gorgeous days before this weekend, while lying on College Green or strolling to class, students should consider ways to show appreciation for the city and campus. With the help of student organizations, the options to contribute to the clean up will be worthwhile and plentiful.
