Athens City Council adopted an ordinance last night to designate Appalachian Center for Economic Networks as the project manager for the Athens Public Market Pavilion Project, which provides a place to unite local artisans, foods and cultural activities.
ACEnet, a non-profit organization that works with business development in southeastern Ohio, will solicit and administer grants on behalf of the city for the project.
Outlined at last week's council meeting, the project calls for the facility to accommodate at least 100 vendors and provide running water, phone lines and electricity for vendors.
The new pavilion, an upgrade from the current outdoor area for the Athens Farmers Market, will be situated near East State Street.
People are really glad that this is moving forward
said council woman Deborah Phillips, D-4th Ward.
Audubon Magazine listed the Athens Farmers Market as one of the top 10 in the country. The market currently is open Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University Mall Parking Lot on East State Street.
