Golf Preview: Team to try new lineup

Happy Valley is the backdrop this weekend as the Ohio men's golf team travels to Penn State on Saturday for the Rutherford Invitational.

The event will feature 36 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday at the Penn State Blue and White Courses. Because of construction on the Blue Course's front nine, the players will play the front nine of the White Course and the back nine of the Blue Course. The White Course's front nine features nearly 3,100 yards and a par 35. The Blue Course's back nine has 3,300 yards and a par 36.

Seniors Jon Johasky, Luke Korner and Brian Elsea along with junior Mark Cimarolli and sophomore Mark Phillips will be representing the Bobcats.

Cooley said the reason for the change in the lineup is because of the Mid-American championships coming up in May. He wants to get different players competing to see who can play in tournaments.

We had a qualifier

and those are the guys that made it Cooley said. We're just trying to get ready for the MAC. We'll probably have a different lineup next weekend at Firestone.

Korner, who went to Athens high school, will be playing in his first tournament since the fall 2004. Korner missed the fall season because he was away on an internship.

He said that even though he wasn't able to play a lot of golf, he is playing really well.

I look forward to playing well and helping the team Korner said. (Me playing well) is no more important than any other time I play. We always go out and try to win.

Korner has never played either of the two Penn State courses.

It's not real long or real narrow, Korner said. My short game is my speciality.

tied for 10th with a 54-hole score of 215 (71-74-70).

I know the course pretty well because I played there in high school, Cimarolli said. The White Course is a short course and is a lot more scoreable. If you don't make your birdies, then you'll lose a few shots to the rest of the field.

Cimarolli thinks the most important factor for his team will be not to let the weather affect the team's game.

It's going to be like 40 degrees, Cimarolli said. We just can't let the weather affect us, if it's cold, rainy or windy.",",17,Archives,Corey Ryan,",",",",",","
