Golf Recap: Ohio women place 3rd, prepare for MAC tourney

In the last tournament before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Ohio women's golf team finished third.

The Bobcats finished up the final 18 holes of the 54-hole Rocket Spring Classic yesterday, ending the tournament with a team score of 946. The Dornoch Golf Club ' a par-71, 5,882-yard course in Delaware, Ohio ' played host to the competition.

Ohio finished Monday with a 636 (307-329) after 36 holes. The team was led by junior Shanna Siefke, who finished the day tied for sixth with scores of 73 and 81. Siefke's first-round 73 was the third-best score of the Classic's first day and a career-best.

I always have the potential (to play that well)

Siefke said. I kept my driver on the fairway and I putted well. The wind picked up (during the second round) and I got some bad breaks.

The Bobcats kept playing good golf as the team finished strong with a 310 in yesterday's final round.

Juniors Kristen Mautz (81-82-78-241) and Meredith Waterston (81-84-78-243) competed in the Classic as well as seniors Ana Brown (75-84-78-237) and Julie Tomlinson (78-82-76-236).

We haven't had four scores in the 70s all spring Ohio assistant coach Jeff Hetler said. Lately we have only been getting one or maybe two scores in the 70s.

Also competing for Ohio as an individual was freshman Lindsay Bergman (88-90-80-258).

Hetler was proud of his team's performance. He said that it was an all around, team effort.

Julie looked pretty good Hetler said. Her shoulder isn't in the best shape

but I think she's learning to play with it. Shanna's 73 was just great. Each of (the players) did good things.

Tomlinson's shoulder was a cause of concern before the tournament. Before the event, Tomlinson said that her shoulder, which will require surgery after the season concludes, usually starts to bother her after 12 holes.

(Monday) was rough in that second 18 holes

Tomlinson said. It's sore now. I don't think it's a major trouble.

The MAC Championships will take place April 28-30 in Indian Springs, Ohio.
