GOLF RECAP: Seniors lead OU at Eastern Kentucky, Marshall Invitationals

Senior Jon Johasky, captain of the Ohio men's golf team, paced the Bobcats with a career-best performance this past weekend at the Marshall Invitational.

Ohio finished the two-day, 54-hole event tied for eighth place in a field of 15 teams as Johasky shot 216 (73-73-70). The score was good enough for a sixth-place individual finish, the best of Johasky's colligate career. His one-under-par 70 performance Saturday was also a career-best.

(Johasky) played very well coach Bob Cooley said. He putted well but he didn't make a lot of putts. A lot of his putts lipped out.

As a team, the Bobcats posted a score of 887 (297-297-293). Eastern Michigan, the winners, carded 868 (294-285-289). The Eagles were led by overall winner Peter Sauerbrei, who finished the weekend at an even-par 213 (75-70-68).

Players played 18 holes on Friday and finished with 36 on Saturday. The tournament was played in Huntington, W.Va., at the par-71 Guyan Golf and Country Club.

Cooley said rain and wind caused problems during the tournament, causing his team to have trouble reading the greens.

Bobcat senior Brian Bickle tied for 16th with a score of 220 (73-73-74) while fellow senior Brian Elsea recorded a 226 (76-77-73).

Juniors Mark Cimarolli and Ryan Siekmann also competed. Cimarolli finished tied for 64th place with a 229 (75-78-76) while Siekmann tied for 72nd, carding a 232 (78-74-80). Mark Phillips, an Ohio State transfer, competed as an individual and finished with a 236 (80-73-83). It was Phillips' first tournament as a Bobcat.

The Bobcat men next compete at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament kicks off in State College, Pa., on April 22, Women sixth at EKU Invite

The Ohio women's golf team, led by two top-20 finishes, placed sixth overall at the Eastern Kentucky Invitational.

Senior Julie Tomlinson tied for 18th with a 54-hole score of 242 (81-80-81). Fellow senior Ana Brown tied for 20th, carding a 243 (81-81-81). The Bobcats finished with a score of 981 (322-328-331) in the 14-team event.

All of the scores for every team got higher

assistant coach Jeff Hetler said. The course played tougher as it got windier.

The three-day tournament began Thursday and lasted through Saturday. Each day included 18-holes at the par-72 Arlington Country Club in Richmond, Ky.

Juniors Shanna Siefke, Meredith Waterston and Kristen Mautz also competed for the Bobcats. Siefke finished with a 245 (81-81-83) while Waterston carded a 251 (79-86-86).

Toledo's Tammy Clelland finished first overall individually with an eight-over-par 224 (74-72-78). The Rockets won the event by 30 strokes, finishing with a score of 922 (299-308-315).

The Bobcat women are competing in the Rocket Spring Classic in Delaware, Ohio, early next week. The tournament serves as the last tune-up for Ohio before the team competes in the Mid-American Conference Championships later this month.
