The Ohio women's golf team had some troubles on the greens yesterday as they played in the first round of the Eastern Kentucky Invitational.
Junior Meredith Waterston led the way for the Bobcats with a 79. Seniors Ana Brown and Julie Tomlinson along with Shanna Siefke each shot 81. Junior Kristen Mautz had an 86 for a team total of 322.
Assistant coach Jeff Hetler said the team did not display the ideal short game. Hetler said his team was hitting the ball well, they just had some trouble finding the bottom of the cup.
We didn't putt well as a team
Hetler said. Basically it was a lot of mental mistakes. If we missed the green we would chip it too hard creating a tough putt.
The women's team will try to improve as they play their second round today. Both today's round and Saturday's final round will include 18 holes each day.Men head to Marshall
After a spring break playing at the famous Pinehurst course, the men's golf team will be playing in the 54-hole, two-day Marshall Invitational.
The Invitational begins today with 36 holes and will finish up Saturday with 18. The Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va., plays host to the invitational.
Guyan features three holes where water comes into play. The most difficult hole is No. 2, a 444-yard par-four.
Along with the 16-team Marshall Invitational, the club also plays host to some U.S. Amateur qualifiers.
Ohio coach Bob Cooley said he expects his team to do well this weekend. The team finished fourth in this tournament last year and they should be in a position to improve, he said.
The Bobcats' last tournament was the Triad Collegiate Challenge in Thomasville, N.C., where junior Ryan Siekmann shot a 1-over par, 72, to pace the team to a second-place finish. The Triad Challenge was played on March 20.
Cooley said the team will not be rusty as they participated in competitive matches at Pinehurst.
Bobcat senior captain Jon Johasky has played at Guyan all four years he has been on the team.
The course is nice
but the greens are tough
Johasky said. I expect us to win
we need to start coming together.
