Lacrosse: 'Cats clobbered on the road

Ohio goalkeeper Jen Heup was able to make 18 saves yesterday when the Bobcats played the Hokies of Virginia Tech, but she could not stop the other 14 that turned into goals for the opposition.

The Hokies' 14 goals would turn out to be too many for the Bobcats to overcome as Ohio dropped the game, 14-5. Despite Heup's career-high 18 saves, which were over half of Virginia Tech's shots on goal (32), her team failed to hold and score the ball throughout the contest.

It is a confidence boost to get that many saves

but that isn't what I am in this for I don't look to get such a number of saves Heup said. I want to be able to help my team in any way possible so the numbers don't matter

I just want to do what I am needed to do.

Ohio coach Allison Valentino praised her goalkeeper's performance after the game because of her efforts all season, despite some rough losses.

She is really having a tremendous season for us

Valentino said. She shouldn't have to see the number of shots she did in today's game

but she has been a rock for us. However

the team dug themselves into a hole and we couldn't get out even with her effort in the goal.

The hole the Bobcats (3-8) found themselves in was an 8-1 deficit at half time that piled up after the Hokies scored the first four and last four goals of the half with the only Bobcat goal coming at the 16:24 mark.

Ohio would attempt to put a run together in the second half, but the 'Cats were only able to put together two goals back-to-back as the Hokies (7-5) were able to score consistently the entire game.

Bobcats Frannie Sullivan, Lindsey Marshall, Devon Dow, Shannon Hadaway and Shannon Lynes all tallied goals in the game. Ohio's leading scorer, Kiersten McLouth, was held without a point and did not even attempt a shot.

After the first half the team came together and we knew we had to be more aggressive and stronger on attack

attacker Lynes said. We finally were able to move the ball around better in the second half

but it was a little too late.

The Bobcats will return to home action at 1 p.m. Sunday, when they take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State at Peggy Pruitt Field.
