New Post editor plans for livelier newspaper

The Post Publishing Board named junior Brittany Kress as The Post's editor for the 2006-07 academic year.

Kress, a magazine journalism major, has worked at The Post since her freshman year, and worked as a copy editor, designer and writer before becoming assistant managing editor this year. Kress also has had several internships outside of The Post.

It all made for a very good package

said Pat Washburn, journalism professor and chair of the Post Publishing Board. The 12-member board, with student, faculty, administration and community representatives, chose Kress after she submitted a packet with three letters of recommendation and was interviewed, Washburn said.

We were interested in somebody that sees that the paper remains a watchdog on campus Washburn said. We thought she would continue to fulfill that purpose and cover the campus.

Kyle Kondik, this year's outgoing editor, has worked with Kress since she was a freshman copy editor and he was a sophomore editorial writer. Kress is well-known and respected at The Post, he said.

She's very capable Kondik said. She works well with people

and she'll be a good leader.

In the interviews, Washburn said the two candidates for editor talked about what they might want to change or keep the same for next year's paper. Kress said she has several changes in mind.

One thing that's different for next year is I hope to have more of a gauge of students

faculty and residents' interests in what they want to see in the paper

Kress said.

Another goal for next year is a redesign of the paper, Kress said.

It'll look different physically

she said.

Kondik's advice to next year's editors of The Post, besides making the paper more visually interesting

is to expand the newspaper's Web site, he said.

It's where newspapers are going

he said. That's where the readership will be.

Chrissy Lane, this year's managing editor, said Kress is an excellent choice for editor of The Post.

She has talent

she's personable

Lane said. She knows what she's doing.

Looking to next year, Kress said she sees The Post doing great things.

I'm looking forward to it
