Renowned performance artist and drag queen Vaginal Davis will perform her show tonight in celebration of PRIDE Week.
Davis believes that both art and life are the same, she said. Her performance art show, Beware the Holy Retarded Whore
does not end when she steps off the stage.
Vaginal Davis chose her stage name as a sexual homage to Angela Davis, a civil and women's rights activist.
Her shows are always very entertaining said Elliot Long, member of the Federation of United Queers and organizer of the event. He said that while Davis addresses serious topics such as homosexuality and race issues, she does it in a humorous gender-bending fashion.
Davis warns audiences that she is unpredictable while performing and that she might find a cute boy
sit on his lap and grab him.
The performance art show will be an overview of her extensive underground career, spanning nearly two decades. It will include a viewing of several of her short films, speaking, singing and audience participation.
I like to be completely extemporaneous and fit the performance to the audience
Davis said.
Because she realizes that audiences have a life of their own and that no two are alike, her performance will be largely improvisational, she said.
Davis' agent for her on-campus visit, Annie Oakley from the Sex Workers Art Show, said that said Davis uses dark comedy and a biting humor, leaving her audience with a lasting impression.
Davis, who refers to herself as a combination of old-fashioned ideals and a traveling gypsy, prefers human contact over technological advances. She keeps in contact with her many fans worldwide.
After her shows, Davis likes to hang out with her fans. She fondly remembers a time when she was at an alcohol-free college and was invited back to a room with some college men to experience their homemade mountain liquor.
I hope when I come to Ohio
I meet some cute
hunky boys who will sweep me off my feet
Davis said. Maybe get a little romance ... College boys love older women
and let's face it. It doesn't get much older than me.
Davis will be performing tonight at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium in Seigfred Hall. Admission to the show will be free. PRIDE Week is sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Programs Center and will continue next week.
