Petland to partner with local shelter

Petland will begin adopting puppies from the Athens County Dog Shelter as part of a new program announced at yesterday's Athens County Commissioners meeting.

The store will adopt puppies from the shelter, vaccinate them, deworm them and adopt them out to owners as part of their Adopt-a-Pet program.

Our hope is to reduce the number of dogs we have to put to sleep at our dog shelter

Commissioner Mark Sullivan said.

Hopefully we can build a really good relationship with the dog shelter said Cassie Whittle, manager of the Petland on East State Street.

In other news, the Athens County Engineer closed on the sale of its East State Street property. The county engineer will receive $2.3 million for the property, which was split four ways.

The plan is to develop the property into an Applebee's restaurant, a CVS pharmacy, a bank and a hotel, said Michael W. Canterbury, deputy engineer for operations.

The new county engineer's building will be located in Canaan Township.
