SOFTBALL RECAP: Zips sweep 'Cats at home

After four consecutive games in which they only plated one run in each contest, the Bobcats' bats finally woke up Sunday against Akron.

Unfortunately, their sure-handed defense went to sleep.

Two Ohio errors in the top of the sixth inning helped turn a one-run Bobcat advantage into a two-run deficit, giving the Zips a lead they would not relinquish in their 7-5 triumph over the Bobcats.

It's just bad luck sometimes

coach Jill Matyuch said, referring to Ohio's four errors for the day. The ball bounces this way or that way and you'll have those..

Catcher Marian Davis, who reached base all four times she stepped to plate Sunday, said the offensive outburst was a good sign of improvement.

We were really proud of the way we hit today she said. We came out strong and hit the ball hard. It's a tough loss because we played so well.

The Bobcat offense was led by second baseman Alicia Catlette, who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, picking up her second home run of the year in the process.

Following Akron second baseman Jamie Stanclift's two-run bomb in the top of the third inning, Catlette responded with a two-run blast of her own in the bottom half of the inning, knotting the game at two.

After a Davis RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, Catlette knocked in two more runs with a single to right, giving the Bobcats a 5-3 lead going into the fifth inning.

I was seeing the ball really well today

Catlette said. I've seen their pitcher in the past

so I kind of knew what she was coming with.

Despite pitcher Michelle Sauter tossing her eleventh complete game of the season, the Bobcats could not muster enough offense in their 2-1 loss to Akron Saturday.

Ohio (23-30 ,6-8 Mid-American Conference) picked up its only run of the game in the sixth inning when Kelly Rodriguez plated Davis with a double to right-center field, bringing the Bobcats within one run going into their final at-bats.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Catlette ripped a triple to right-center field, but was left stranded when shortstop Amanda Sacks flied out to end the contest.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Youngstown State for a doubleheader.
