Band reunites after 3-year hiatus for another 'fling,' possibly more

After three years apart, rock group Anything But Kind will reunite at 10 p.m. Friday at The Red Brick Tavern, 14 N. Court St.

With only a month's preparation, the grunge-, metal- and progressive rock-influenced band will play a two-part set consisting of old material, new material and '90s rock covers to a crowd of expected family and friends. There will also be a free keg and CDs.

It's kind of like running into your ex-girlfriend

and all of a sudden you guys get real serious and then you guys stop seeing each other all of a sudden. One last fling before we go said guitarist Majed Khurshid, a sophomore at Ohio University.

Anything But Kind disbanded in 2003 because of time and life pressures, but the members stayed in Athens and jammed on occasion.

The reunion show has been building for quite some time, said guitarist and backup vocalist Linzie McDargh. The band would like to thank their neighbors for being so patient during band practices, they said.

The group has learned 13 covers and all of its old material in preparation for the show, but the process was surprisingly effortless, said Justin Farcas, drummer and OU senior. There's a communication that's completely subliminal between all of us he said.

Anything But Kind's emotionally driven songs mix an intense, full-bodied rock with hardcore beats and guitar stylings.

There are so many influences in Anything But Kind's music that it has become something much larger than what the members are, said singer Mike Khurshid, an OU alumnus. If one of its songs starts going into a dark corner, it always seems to find its way out, he said.

There's not really a fine line between lyrics and music; they kind of bring each other together

Farcas said.

Every member contributes to every aspect of the band's songwriting, and as a result each song has a different emotion attached to it, they said.

To aid in the extraction of those emotions, Anything But Kind interacts with the crowd, hoping to give them a unique experience and some good memories, said bassist and backup vocalist Matt Hutchinson, an OU senior.

The more we move

the more the crowd tends to move

and then it just snowballs from there

Majed Khurshid said.

The band members said they think the hype at this Friday's show will be big because the stage is on a low level.

Although this show will be its first in years, Anything But Kind is unsure about what will happen after it. The members have talked about relocating to Seattle, where Hutchinson is from, if they are bored next June, they said.

There's too much here to put a knife in the heart and kill it off for good

said OU alumnus Mike Khurshid.

Anything But Kind is performing Friday at 10 p.m. at The Red Brick Tavern. Admission is $2.
