After taking an early six-run lead, the Ohio baseball team fell victim to a late-inning Dayton rally as the Flyers defeated the Bobcats 7-6 last night.
We had a couple of guys who did a good job pitching
but for the most part most of the other guys didn't do a good job Ohio coach Joe Carbone said.
Ohio (18-23) jumped on Dayton starter Quinn Haselhorst in the first inning, scoring four runs off the left-hander. J.T. Osburn walked to lead off the game and Bryant Witt reached on a fielder's choice. Both scored on Anthony Gressick's double down the left field line to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Gressick then came around to score when Willie Walker reached on a fielder's choice. A double by Chris Klimko drove in Walker for the Bobcats' fourth run of the inning. The Bobcats added another run in the second after Osburn walked and then scored on a Gressick RBI double through the left side.
Ohio extended its lead to 6-0 in the third after Jared Willis singled and scored on Dusty Hammond's double. The run would prove to be the final score for the Bobcats in the game.
After Ohio pitchers John Angelicchi and Zach Elmer retired the first nine batters, the Flyers cut the Bobcats' lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning.
Dayton (28-19) then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning as they sent ten batters to the plate. After Adam Getty led off the inning with a walk, he came around to score on a double by Halen Schumm. William Benoit tied the game at six with a three-run home run. The Flyers added another run in the inning to take a 7-6 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
Reliever Chris Rigo got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth to keep the Bobcats within one run, but Dayton pitcher Craig Rohren sent the Bobcats down in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the win for the Flyers.
We didn't make any adjustments on the second pitcher that they put in
Carbone said. He pretty much shut us down for the rest of the game.
Ohio reliever Cody Neyman took the loss for the Bobcats as he allowed two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning of work. Sean Finn pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out six Ohio batters to take the win.
Walker's 18-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-5 on the afternoon. Witt went 0-for-4 in the game as his 19-game hitting streak came to an end as well.
The Bobcats look to get back on track this weekend when they return to Mid-American Conference play on the road against Miami.
