Column falsely assessed media's take on 'Da Vinci'

I am writing this letter in response to Ashley Herzog's column titled Media play up 'Da Vinci Code' furor that appeared in the May 17 edition of The Post.

Herzog relies on false generalizations and inaccurate characterizations in her argument asserting that the media has distorted Christians' response to the movie. In fact, I believe Herzog herself distorts reality as she attempts to make her ultimately unconvincing case.

In the second paragraph, Herzog states that 'The Da Vinci Code' is offensive to Christians

especially Catholics.' I not only have read The Da Vinci Code but also am Catholic and believe the novel is most aptly characterized as a compelling and entertaining work of fiction and not offensive in any sense of the word.

Many of my friends are also Catholic, and none of them have described the book as offensive. In fact, a recent poll corroborates my anecdotal experience. The poll showed that 72 percent of Americans (presumably most being Christian) regard the work as entertainment and not serious commentary on religion (http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-05-10-da-vinci-poll_x.htm).
