The Athens County Commissioners approved a contract yesterday with the Tri-County Career Center in Nelsonville that will give $225,000 in tuition and books to adult recipients of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, federal welfare funds.
Jack Frech, director of the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services, met with commissioners to discuss the contract.
In order to qualify for this assistance, families must be at 150 percent of the federal poverty level and have at least one minor in the household. The federal poverty line for a family of four is $20,000.
The assistance gives recipients the opportunity to receive new training and find a new job, County Commissioner Bill Theisen said.
The commissioners already had a contract with the career center, but the new contract increases the amount of money for the program by $150,000.
In other business, the commissioners have developed a County Government Complex Safety Committee.
The committee, which is composed of one representative from each elected office in the county, met for the first time last week and will continue to meet once a month.
The mission of the committee is to review safety concerns in the county and to investigate serious accidents.
This is something we should have had in place a long time ago
Theisen said.
The committee is part of a 10-point program to reduce the premiums that the county pays on worker's compensation. The county has successfully reduced its claims, and premiums have decreased by 4 percent. 17
