In regards to fencing off Court Street for Halloween: If Athens really wants to do something about the Halloween problem then they should follow Southern Illinois University's (Carbondale, IL) plan and close the university for the week.
After a student's death in 2000, the university closed its campus and dorms and took legislative matters to prevent the bars and liquor establishments from selling alcohol around Halloween. According to one site, www.egyptianaaa.org/SI-History3.htm, These measures have effectively stopped the gathering of large crowds and ended the 'Halloween tradition' in Carbondale.
This plan sounds exactly like what Ohio University needs to do before someone dies. We already have had stabbings and police officers hurt ' do we really need to have someone die before we take care of this? A fence will only make the situation worse.
Take some pointers from Southern Illinois University and really set an example.' Katherine A. Tildes is a senior women, gender and minority studies major.
