MAC notebook: Kent takes top spots on men's academic golf team

The Mid-American Conference announced Monday the seven golfers named to the 2006 Men's Academic All-MAC Golf Team.

Headlining the list are the two co-medalists from Kent State's championship team ' sophomore Tommy Wiegand and junior Marc Bourgeois. Bourgeois has now been Academic All-MAC three years in a row.

Both golfers shot three under par at the 2006 MAC Championships to lead the Golden Flashes squad to a second consecutive title.

Northern Illinois produced two award winners in Zach Jecklin and Nick Schenk, while Grant Christman of Ohio, Patrick Wilkes-Krier of Ball State and Korey Mahoney of Eastern Michigan were also honored.

To be considered for the award, students need a 3.20 accumulative grade point average, and must have participated in 50 percent of the year's contests.Broncos clinch season title

The Western Michigan softball team secured the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship on Saturday with a 6-5 victory over Toledo.

After the Rockets tied the game in the seventh inning with two runs to force the game into extra innings, Western Michigan's Lauren Fuller hit a walk-off home run for the Broncos in the eighth to grab the win and the title.

It wasn't a pretty win

but we'll take it Western coach Kathy Leitke said. I thought we showed good energy and focus and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end.

Western Michigan beat Toledo again on Sunday to improve their record to 31-13, with an intimidating 18-4 mark in the MAC.

The top-seeded Broncos are scheduled to play No. 8-seed Ohio at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Currie Stadium in Midland, Mich.Western Michigan represents MAC in Tennis

Both the men's and women's tennis teams from Western Michigan are going to represent the MAC in the 2006 NCAA Tennis Championships after winning their respective conference tourneys.

The men finished their season with 25-4 record while the women compiled a record of 20-5, going undefeated in MAC play.

The Bronco men are scheduled to play Florida (15-7) in the first round on May 13. Florida is ranked No. 16 in the nation, and the Broncos are ranked No. 56.

Should the Broncos win, they will play again on May 14 before they can advance to the round of 32 which will be held at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford University.

The Western women are going to play the No. 11 team in the nation, California (16-7), on May 12. They must also win twice before they advance to the championship site at Stanford.

The 64-team tournament is broken down into four regions, and each region is broken down into four sub-regionals hosted by each of the top 16 ranked teams. Western Michigan's women play at host California for their first two games, and the men play at Miami (Fla.).

The National Championship game will be held on May 22 for the women and May 23 for the men.
