Mothers of Ohio University students who don't spend all of Moms' Weekend on Court Street will have the opportunity to raise money for breast cancer research, revisit the 1960s and meet administrators, among other activities hosted by OU organizations.
OU's University Program Council hopes that this year's Walk for the Cure, which raises money for breast cancer research and awareness, will attract at least 1,000 OU students and their moms, said Molly McKenney, UPC annual events chair.
We had a little less than 1
000 last year so we're hoping to reach that number this year McKenney said. We do Walk for the Cure over Moms' Weekend because breast cancer has touched so many women
so they can come together and fight it in Walk For the Cure.
The walk raised about $8,000 for breast cancer research last year, McKenney said. It will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ping Center. Participants may register there before the event, or they may sign up today between 2 and 4 p.m. at Baker University Center.
Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, McKenney said.
Another Moms' Weekend event hosted by UPC is a concert by British Mania, a Beatles tribute band from New Jersey. The concert will be at 8 p.m. Friday in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
We invited British Mania because both moms and students can enjoy the music
McKenney said. We wanted to provide a fun concert for them to attend together.
On Sunday, OU's Department of Campus Life will host a reception with OU Provost Kathy Krendl at OU President Roderick McDavis' residence, 35 Park Place Drive.
The reception at the president's house is a Moms' Weekend tradition
dating back to President (John Calhoun) Baker
said Ann Lombard, director of Campus Life. Students and their parents can tour the downstairs part of the house and meet the provost.
Moms' Weekend has always been the most popular OU family weekend, Lombard said.
Other Moms' Weekend events include an art festival hosted by the Dairy Barn Arts Center, an OU Fashion Associates fashion show and an Open Stage Night at the Front Room. For a complete list of events, go to www.ohio.edu/familyweekends/moms.
