Editor's Note: This is the first in a two-part series detailing the Ohio men's and women's golf teams' 2005-06 season. The series will conclude Thursday.
A rollercoaster ride of a season has finally come to an end.
The Ohio men's and women's golf teams wrapped up their seasons with the men finishing in eighth place at the Mid-American Conference Championship and the women placing fifth in their MAC Tournament last week.
For the men, it has been an up-and-down season that started in September with the Bowling Green John Piper Intercollegiate. The Bobcats finished third in that intercollegiate, which proved to be Ohio's highest finish on the season. The 'Cats also finished third in the Big East/MAC Challenge in November.
The BGSU John Piper was also the men's team's best finish in terms of score. The team accumulated a 858 (284-283-291) in the year's first tournament.
Seniors Jon Johasky, Brian Elsea, Brian Bickle and Luke Korner will be leaving the team.
Bickle had the best career of the three as he played in more events, 38, and had the best career average, 75.47 per round. Johasky competed in 29 events throughout his career averaging 75.87 per round while Elsea averaged 76.57 in 30 events. In seven career events, Korner averaged a 77.95, with his low round being a 70.
The four seniors combined for two top-five, four top-ten and 19 top-20 finishes.
On Monday, Johasky received the Earl Yestingsmeier Sportsmanship Award.
It's been a lot of fun
Johasky said. I've learned a lot from playing and being a student athlete. I'll never forget it. Women lose two elite seniors
One senior wrote herself into the school record books while the other wrapped up her career with a miraculous MAC tournament.
Julie Tomlinson and Ana Brown will be sorely missed by the Ohio women's golf team next season, assistant coach Jeff Hetler said.
Back in October, Tomlinson shot an opening-round 66 at the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The 66 was the best round in the team's history. As a team, the Bobcats also broke the school record with a 286. The team and Tomlinson each finished second.
I'm not just going to remember one thing Tomlinson said about her senior season. I've had so many good memories.
Tomlinson broke the two-round school record with a 139 (66-73) and the team also broke the two-round record finishing with a 597.
Two weeks ago at the MAC Championships, Brown finished a career-best third overall after a 72-hole score of 294 (75-71-75-73).
We had a season of ups and downs Brown said. We had to try to make the most out of it. We had a ton of fun and everyone made my season an enjoyable one.
Hetler said that he will always remember the record breaking weekend. Hetler, who always talks highly of the two seniors, also said that Brown's third place finish was an event to remember.
We're going to miss them a lot
Hetler said. They've competed in almost every tournament the last four years.
Both Tomlinson and Brown will be graduating in June and each will be trying to make golf a career. Tomlinson said that she has an internship at a country club outside of Indianapolis this summer. She said that next spring she will try to compete on the Futures Tour, which is the developmental tour of the LPGA.
Brown plans to move to Orlando and begin her apprenticeship to one day become a golf pro.
