Without more money, Taft's plan will fail

When reading about Gov. Bob Taft's Ohio Core education plan, I was extremely annoyed. Not only has the governor cut millions of dollars in state educational funding throughout his terms in office, but also now he is trying to add to the problem he helped to create. As an education major, I have seen the damage this decrease in funding has caused and the damage the Ohio Core plan will cause.

The Ohio Core plan is good in theory, but it fails to solve major problems found in schools. This plan wants students to take a certain amount of classes in each core subject to be better prepared for after graduation, but most students already take well beyond the minimum requirements. In order for all students to take these classes, more teachers will have to be hired to teach the additional classes.

Where will the money come from to hire these teachers all over the state? And where will we find the room for these additional classes?

In my field observation at various area schools, I see this plan being a huge problem. It is hard enough for these schools to function properly with laws such as No Child Left Behind

but now the governor wants to make poor, overcrowded schools add more classes and more teachers. How could this possibly be a solution?

In order to fix the educational system we must find solutions to fix current problems ' not add more. Until educational funding is increased, we will never be able to enact the Ohio Core plan.' Kelly Jones is a junior integrated language arts major. 17
