A much needed rest

I often haven't supported our university president, but in regards to the recent letter Nothing to snooze at

I must say I fully approve of Roderick McDavis' decision to rest his eyes during Dr. Charles Vest's afternoon commencement address. The letter writer said she heard an address on the pressing global issue of energy from her fifth-row perch, but up in the first row, all I heard was some key passages from the Big Book of Commencement Cliches cobbled together into a snoozer of a speech. Surf the waves of change. Live as a citizen of the world. Someone get me a pillow.I'd say listening to Vest as an Honor's Tutorial College student instead of sitting with my fellow journalism majors at the morning session to see what I've since heard was a hilarious speech by Brian Unger is the one time my honors status put me at a disadvantage. Now, is energy policy important? Dear God, yes. But the topic's primacy doesn't necessarily lead to inspired oratory ' anyone remember the State of the Union?I'd be concerned about McDavis' demeanor when listening to a discussion about the administration-faculty relations meltdown, or a foot-dragging plagiarism investigation, or the fact that the same people who write those West African scam e-mails are probably opening credit cards in my name right now thanks to our Swiss-cheese tech security. But to catching Z's during Vest's non-starter of a speech, I say: Take a load off, Rod. You've had a rough year.' Noah Blundo, an '06 alumnus, is a former Post columnist and copy editor. 17
