I'm writing in response to Carleigh A. Kosonovich's letter (Aug. 3, More than meets the eye). I did not see a hard copy of The Summer Post (July 20) she is referring to, but I don't understand why it angered her so much. No, the Indiana Jones of Beer was not the most important piece of news to report that week, but for a newspaper covering Ohio University and Athens, I'm sure it was the most interesting.
The beer festival wasn't about partying; it was about enjoying beer and drinking responsibly. It was an event that was occurring in Athens for an entire week, and The Summer Post staff members decided to give it good coverage. Why does Ms. Kosonovich think it shouldn't have been in the paper?
It's hard for me to understand why Ms. Kosonovich thinks The Post is not a legitimate news source (and apparently an alcoholic news source). The Post has done a better job covering the OU security breaches and the plagiarism scandal in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology than any other media outlet.
But maybe the university agrees with Ms. Kosonovich in thinking The Post is just something for alcoholics; that might explain why The Powers That Be in Cutler Hall have been more focused on stopping students from drinking than fixing problems of stolen identities and academic dishonesty.'
