OU building named after U.S. congressman involved in scandal

A building on Ohio University's Eastern campus is named after an Ohio Congressman recently embroiled in scandal.

The Robert W. Ney recreational building on OU's campus in St. Clairsville was named in 1996 and dedicated in fall 1997.

Rep. Ney, who represents the 18th district, which includes St. Clairsville, recently announced that he would not seek reelection due to his ties with lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The Congressman has not been indicted on any charges and denies any wrongdoing, according to The Associated Press.

Ohio House appropriations in the early '90s enabled OU's Eastern campus to construct the building. The facility was named after Ney because of his distinguished career and support of education

according to an OU Board of Trustees 1996 resolution.

OU officials said they do not plan on renaming the building anytime soon.

Considering Congressmen Ney is not under indictment it would be inappropriate to say anything said university spokesman Jack Jeffery.

Ohio Senator Joy Padgett will likely take Ney's place on the ballot, although the AP reported she might be ineligible due to an Ohio law that bars politicians who lose one primary from entering another in the same year.
