The Ohio State University Board of Trustees has come out against the Learn and Earn ballot initiative, which proposes placing thousands of slot machines across Ohio and funneling 30 percent of the revenue toward college scholarships.
But that leaves 70 percent ' which amounts to millions of dollars ' going straight into the pockets of private companies under the guise of educational funding. When the school that would be the most likely benefactor of the program opposes it, it's clear that Ohioans are seeing through the underhanded attempt to import gambling into the Buckeye State.
Ohio University should follow suit, along with other public institutions, to show that the universities are not fooled by this campaign. This could also push the Ohio Board of Regents to take a stand against the bill as well, and turn Learn and Earn into a distant memory.
