ATHENS ' Athens County Commissioners agreed yesterday to support the Athens Conservancy's applications for $100,000 in Clean Ohio Fund Grants to expand the Athens Trail.
The conservancy hopes to add to the trail by purchasing 15 acres of Athens County-owned land behind the county Department of Children Services on East State Street and helping the city purchase the 17-acre property next to it with the grant money, John Knouse, a board member for the conservancy, said.
Some of the money the conservancy hopes to get from the Clean Ohio Fund will be used to purchase the 15 acres, which the county will bid or auction.
The two pieces of land will connect to Sells Park, furthering the completion of the Athens Trail, which the conservancy has been working on for five years, Knouse said.
