Singer-songwriter Kevin Devine, based out of New York City, will descend upon the rolling hills of Athens tonight at The Front Room with his own mixture of searing folk-rock.
Born in Brooklyn and raised on Staten Island, Devine has been playing and writing music since the age of seven while sucking in the eclectic background and culture of the city.
There's a lot of really fascinating
compelling strange interesting
weird
funny
tragic characters in New York and if you're somebody looking to write
or about experience anyway
there's a lot to pull from
he said.
Despite his exposure to all the city has to offer, Devine doesn't consider himself part of the NYC music scene.
Devine, who has been called a perspective folk poet by Rolling Stone magazine, is in the grips of a North American tour for his first major label debut from Capitol Records, Put Your Ghost To Rest.
The Goddamn Band will accompany Devine and provide a spirited and boisterous background to his lyrics both on the road and on the album. They are scheduled to open 20 dates for KT Tunstall, who has recently received national attention for her hit song Black Horse & The Cherry Tree.
I've been doing this a lot now for three years and there's a good story every night. They just kind of blur together into just one good and strange fun experience
he said.
Devine also said that while on the road the people he encounters are generally in their lives immediately
concretely good.
Influenced by the likes of Nirvana, Elliot Smith and Bob Dylan, whom he calls untouchable
