For the first time since 1972, the Kent State Golden Flashes went into Bowling Green's Perry Stadium and won. Kent State manhandled the Falcons (2-2, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) on Saturday 38-3, their largest road victory since 1973.
After losing 11 straight games, Kent State (2-2, 2-0 MAC) has won two consecutive games, and remains atop the MAC East Division. They are 2-0 in the MAC for the first time since 2003.
The Golden Flashes started fast when wide receiver Shawn Bayes took a reverse 79-yards for a touchdown.
Early in the second quarter, cornerback Usama Young intercepted a pass at Kent State's own 38-yard line, after which the Golden Flashes stormed down the field with a 13-play, 62-yard drive, which was capped off by a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Edelman.
We came out and played with a lot of intensity and passion
Golden Flashes coach Doug Martin said. These two wins we've put together have been really big for us.
Six different Kent State players combined for 216 yards rushing against the Falcons, while Edelman completed 14-of-22 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in addition to one rushing touchdown.
The win comes only a week before the Golden Flashes meet rival Akron this weekend in Kent. The two schools are separated by just 14 miles.
The rivalry deal is going to be huge for us Martin said. It makes for a great college atmosphere when two teams like this get together.
A win against the Zips could go a long way in proving the validity of the Golden Flashes early successes this season.
