Ohio University's Department of Parking Services has changed the hours of enforcement for two sets of parking meters on campus in the hope of reducing confusion and inconvenience, a parking official said.
Parking Services adjusted the hours on 18 meters at Konneker Alumni Center and eight metered parking spaces in Lot 37 near the Hudson Health Center at the end of July in response to complaints.
Prior to the changes, the meters near Konneker were enforced only until 5 p.m., so many drivers would arrive in the afternoon, pay for a couple of hours and then enjoy unlimited free parking in the evening, said Sherry Barnes, director of Parking Services.
Some students wishing to park near the library in the evening then were unable to find spaces, she said. The new restrictions, under which the meters are monitored from 7 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, should increase parking turnover for library visitors, Barnes said.
The meters in Lot 37 also will be enforced during those hours every day. Before the change, the meters were enforced until 5 p.m. and a faculty/staff permit was required to park in the lot after 5 p.m. and on weekends, which caused confusion, Barnes said.
I expect our number of citations to decrease
she said, adding that Parking Services has received positive feedback.
Alli Purcell, a senior music therapy major who also works at Baker University Center, said that though $5 meter violations might increase, she appreciates the changes.
It's nice now; if you work after (5 p.m.) you don't have to pay a $20 ticket for not having a permit, she said.
