Renamed Campus Edge gets a nod

The proposed apartment complex previously known as Campus Edge took another step in the development process Thursday as the Athens Planning Commission gave preliminary approval to the most recent version of the project.

The complex, now called The Summit at Coate's Run, has come before the commission under different names and plans from multiple developers for more than seven years.

Before proceeding for consideration by Athens City Council, the project needs final approval from the commission. The project developer, Columbus-based Edwards Communities, still needs to address several details before that happens, Edwards representative Rick Kirk said.

Those details include how much soil to cut off hills in the developing area ' more than 25 acres, near the Dairy Barn and University Courtyard ' and where to deposit the soil afterward, commission Chairwoman Joanne Prisley said. She also voiced concerns about the visual appeal of the area without the natural shape of the hills.

If approved, the complex will feature 896 bedrooms in 11 buildings. Project developers previously had estimated the cost at $35 million.
