Students help United Appeal raise funds, donated goods

More than 50 Ohio University students have joined Athens County residents this week in volunteering during the United Appeal for Athens County's kickoff.

United Appeal, a fundraising organization for 15 volunteer groups in Athens County, organized the week to create awareness for those groups, which include Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters, and jump-start the next round of fundraising. Pam Vander Ark Harvey, executive director for United Appeal, said. The fundraising campaign will run through February.

The organization used to sponsor a volunteer day, but there were so many volunteers that the board decided to make it a weeklong event, Vander Ark Harvey said. Last year, more than 100 people participated in some form, including OU student groups like Alpha Pi Omega, the OU School of Dance, African American Brotherhood and Circle K, she said.

Opportunities for students and area residents to volunteer include:

' Donating food and baby clothing in collection boxes at the county commissioners' office on Court Street and the OU School of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences. Today is the last day.

' Volunteering to collect donations Saturday before the OU football game at Peden Stadium.

' Helping in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house.

' Assembling Disaster and Comfort Kits for the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
