Administration produces division, not diversity

The diversity movement has obviously failed ' a point made evident by the racial and ethnic divides demonstrated on Tuesday night's SEAL (Students for Effective and Accountable Leadership) meeting. Rather than creating a diverse population where students are not identified by race, color or creed, it would appear the diversity movement has only served to create an atmosphere characterized by the emphasis of differences.

McDavis has a history of calling those who oppose his administration racist

as evident last year during faculty meetings (I seem to recall him walking out of one). And, as a university president, he is accountable for his actions and policies. That accountability is a property of his position, not of his skin color. In an article on Wednesday's Post, Shauntina Thornton commented He's trying. What more can you ask for? We can ask for policies that make sense, spending that is checked and worthwhile, and leadership that is effective and accountable to the population it serves.

The justification that his administration has done well because it has promoted diversity, regardless of its failings elsewhere, is akin to accepting one good apple out of a rotten bunch and claiming that the entire harvest is excellent.

And worst of all? The racial divide and tension demonstrated at this meeting demonstrates that the diversity movement has not been a success ' it has done little more than delineate differences and create division between people.
