In the race for Ohio's attorney general, both candidates are focused on increasing accountability in state government after the political scandals of recent years.
State Senator Marc Dann, D-Liberty Township, and State Auditor Betty Montgomery are both focused on increasing accountability in state government. Dann hopes to increase contracting agencies' accountability to the state.
I was frustrated with what I saw with the way business was being done in state government
said Dann, who was elected to the State Senate in 2001, adding that he would like to eliminate the practice of trading government contracts for political favors.
Montgomery, who has served as state auditor since 2003, would like to streamline government structure and improve management.
There's a lot of duplication and waste she said. A lot of it isn't because people are stupid or lazy it's because they've got so much to do.
She said that she would like to do a performance audit and a technology review of the attorney general's office.
The candidates have different plans for helping the residents of Southeast Ohio. Montgomery said she would like to focus on increasing the supply of staff and equipment to law enforcement agencies in the region.
I'd like to see us have more crime team agents available for local law enforcement agents in Southeast Ohio
she said.
Dann said that he would like to reform the school funding system statewide, something he thinks the people of the area have been waiting for.
Throughout the state, Montgomery said she plans to focus on stopping sexual predators, predatory lending and Medicaid fraud. Dann also wants to crack down on predatory lending and fraud with pharmaceutical companies.
Montgomery has served as a state senator for Perrysburg, and was attorney general from 1995 to 2002. Dann's previous political experience includes serving on the Liberty Township Board of Education from 2001 to 2002.
