Faulty chillers fixed in Alden, Scripps

Students sweating over books in the library can expect a break, as repairs of Alden Library's cooling system were expected to be completed by late yesterday.

Patrons should begin to feel the difference early next week, said Ron Young, facilities coordinator for Alden Library.

The two chillers, one in Alden Library and one in Scripps Hall, are part of the air conditioning unit that is responsible for cooling the water. One of these chillers is being rebuilt, a project estimated to cost between $20,000 and $25,000. Chiller repairs were scheduled to be finished last week, but additional parts were ordered, delaying the project, said John Kotowski, associate vice president for facilities.

I've got my trusty fan

but it's not pleasant said senior Derek Apple, a Learning Commons lab adviser. When I do work on the other computers I can't stand it.

The current chillers have been in place since 1984, and preventative maintenance is done on the system and other equipment in the library and Scripps Hall regularly. Kotowski said his office is doing everything we can to get the chillers back online.

It's been like this since I've been here

all of Fall Quarter

said Sarita Sankey, a library assistant.

Replacing the chillers would cost around $500,000, and funding is still being identified, Kotowski said, adding he believes it is a priority to look for their replacements.

Replacement of the main chiller is scheduled for next fall, and should happen within the year, Young said.

The equipment is near the end of its useful life and probably needs to be replaced somewhere in the near future

Kotowski said.
