Football player appeals conviction

An Ohio University football player convicted in September of misdemeanor assault has appealed that conviction, though the specific grounds for his appeal won't be clear until December.

Junior Paul Johnson, an OU offensive lineman, was sentenced to 10 days in jail for an April assault of a bar manager at The Pub on Court Street. After a media uproar about his initial team-imposed penalty of six days of studying, Johnson also was suspended from the football team for the rest of this academic year.

Melissa Luna, Johnson's attorney, declined to say on what grounds her client is appealing. She said she still is waiting for a complete trial transcript and should file court papers in December stating the exact nature of the appeal.
