In the general election on November 7, you'll be asked to help decide who will be Ohio's next governor, Supreme Court justices, treasurer, auditor and a number of other vital positions within our great state.
You also will be asked something new when you go to your polling place: To show identification. New voting requirements, along with state-of-the-art voting equipment, will be in place to help eliminate voter fraud and to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to have their voice heard.
Ohio law protects your right to vote. But it is the responsibility of all Ohio voters to learn and understand the requirements of voting.
While many of the responsibilities of Ohio voters have remained the same, state law recently changed, requiring that all voters show identification at polling places. Doing this not only protects against voter fraud, but it ensures voters are in the right polling location.
By law, acceptable forms of ID are bank statements, utility bills, paychecks and any government-issued document showing your current address. You may also use your Ohio driver's license or Ohio photo ID. ' even if it shows a previous address.
We also will see several proposed amendments to the Ohio Constitution on this November's ballot. The language for these proposed amendments will be made available to all voters through newspaper advertising, the 2006 Issues Report distributed by the Secretary of State's office, and at www.TakeIDOhio.org, which offers resources and information on voting requirements and rights.
Multiple efforts are taken to provide the proposed amendment language to you, but it is ultimately up to you to locate this information and make an informed decision.
The right to vote gives us all the opportunity to change our world by helping to decide the future leadership of our communities, state and country. But we also must be aware that voting is our civic duty to ensure the continued prosperity and order of our great state. It is your right and your responsibility.Office of the Ohio Secretary of State
