Outdated guest, visitor policies to be updated

Guest and visitation policies at Ohio University residence halls should be updated to allow OU students to register guests of the opposite sex, according to a Student Senate resolution passed last night. The commission thinks that you should be able to register opposite-sex guests

said Chris Diehl, Residence Life commissioner and sponsor of the resolution.

Under the new policy, students will be under no sex-based restrictions regarding whom they can register as guests, and visitation rights will extend to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A visitor is defined as an OU student who is not living in your room Diehl said. Guests are distinguished from visitors because they do not attend OU.

Under current policy, which was written in 1986, visitors are allowed in freshmen rooms until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Students are not allowed to register guests of the opposite sex at any time with the exception of Sibs Weekend and Halloween weekend, Diehl said.

Single-sex halls will be exempt from the new policy and each hall will create their own policies regarding guests, according to the resolution.

For some of the students they chose to live there

said Amanda Roder, University Life commisioner. We don't want to force the policy on them.
