The Movement Organization will introduce audiences to a vast array of dance styles in its Fall Quarter The Movement/Dance Share concert this weekend.
John Bohuslawsky, the group's faculty advisor, said no school could possibly specialize in every type of dance that exists, and the Ohio University School of Dance is no exception. The Movement is a useful group on campus because it allows students to encounter many different types of dancing, from tap and swing dancing to Irish and African dancing, he said.
Since this is a liberal arts school
students should try and experience as many types of art as possible while they have the chance and while they can still afford the tickets said Bohuslawsky. The Movement tries to accommodate this by promoting dance to everyone, he said.
People think they know what dance is ' stereotypes really ' but they don't really know until they experience it firsthand
said Nicole Bryant, a junior dance major and president of The Movement Organization.
Members of The Movement Organization, the Underground and the Jitterbug Club will be performing. Dancers from James Madison University will be showing four pieces as well.
Bryant said last year James Madison invited The Movement Organization to share half of their concert time and this year the Movement is reciprocating.
The OU pieces and two of the James Madison University's pieces are student-choreographed. The other two dances from James Madison University are faculty-choreographed pieces.
The show will be a mix of dance styles consisting of mostly modern dance pieces with some swing and hip hop as well. The show will also include some postmodern pieces that are designed to give the audience something to think about.
Most people see modern dance and think street-dancing
but it's basically the opposite
Bryant said. Modern is loose and bendy and curvy.
Bryant said one of the missions of the group this year is to educate students and faculty about dance and what it means.
Dance Share will open tonight and continue with a second performance at 8 p.m. tomorrow night in Putnam Hall's Shirley Wimmer Dance Theatre. Tickets are still available.
