Student Senate commended the Year of the Woman Committee on its positive commitment to women and diversity through a collaborative effort, according to a resolution passed at last night's meeting.
It's a vital step in promoting the diversity that we strive and work for on this campus
said Lee Robbins, Womens' Affairs commissioner. It's also a great opportunity to draw national attention to Ohio University in a positive way.
The Year of the Woman is the first of five more years dedicated to certain diverse groups on campus, according to the resolution.
It's bringing the whole campus together on an issue of diversity said Amanda Roder, University Life commissioner.
The resolution was based on a presentation made in last week's meeting by Chad Barnhardt, assistant director of Baker Center, about the Year of the Woman, Roder said.
A concern about the marketing budget for the Year of the Woman surfaced during this presentation, because one does not exist, Roder said.
However, this effort is a comprehensive one, she said, adding that the Year of the Woman commission will comprise administrators, students and faculty from different organizations on campus to do their part to emphasize the Year.
These people will be asked to present ideas that can be tied into the Year of the Woman, she said.
There's already so much support on this campus to get good programming said Robbins.
These programs include working with My Sister's Place in Athens, Take Back the Night, women in the Kennedy Lecture Series and more, she said. She added that her commission has been doing its part to collaborate the year with the new Women's Center at the new Baker Center.
There are plans within senate to possibly include a woman speaker in Pride Week, Roder said.
