Troupe to maintain tradition with cult classic

Members of student theater group The Lost Flamingo Company will lace up their corsets, put on their heels and take audience members to the late night double feature picture show tonight through Thursday for their fourth annual production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

In the tradition of the decades-old midnight movie sensation, members of the troupe will act out the entire show on stage at The Union, 18 W. Union St., while the original 1975 movie plays in the background.

Rocky Horror follows the unfortunate adventures of Brad Majors and Janet Weiss as they become trapped in the mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a sweet transvestite mad scientist from Transsexual, Transylvania. It's a musical, complete with song and dance numbers.

It's such a strange movie

but anybody can love Rocky Horror said Lacie Turcott, a junior and director of the production. Seeing it is definitely an experience.

Geoff Smith, who will start graduate school at Ohio University in January, plays Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a character he has inhabited for four years now.

It's a very fun role he said. It's fun to be part of something that has been a cult phenomenon for 31 years.

While The Lost Flamingo Company does different shows every year, Rocky Horror became its first annual show, said Janiene Torch, the show's media relations representative and an actor in the production.

We decided to continue it because it's very participatory

she said. There isn't so much separation between the actors and the audience.

The audience participates in the production by way of callbacks, words or phrases that audience members yell out in response to actions on the stage. While some callbacks have been standards for decades, audience members can make up others, Smith said.

Seeing the show is a great communal experience

he said. It's really wild and crazy and you're not going to see anything like it 'til next Halloween.
