Voter registration up this year

Athens County has 42,573 voters registered this year, 2,760 more voters than the gubernatorial election in 2002, according to the Athens County Board of Elections.

During the last gubernatorial race there were 39,813 voters registered, said Debbie Quivey, director of the Athens County Board of Elections.

The board also has seen an increase in the number of requests for absentee ballots, partially because of the state's new no-fault absentee voting law, which allows voters to use absentee ballots without providing a specific reason for doing so. As of Friday, there were 1,986 requests for absentee ballots, compared with 1,337 total requested absentee ballots in 2002, Quivey said.

Voters can vote absentee until November 6 at the Board of Elections Office on Court Street in Athens. Absentee ballots must be turned into the Board of Elections by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, November 7.
