Joe Vance displays a higher-than-normal degree of arrogance in his latest column Superstition relies on illogical gullibility (Oct. 17). In an attempt to illustrate his disdain for superstition, he demonstrates appalling ethnocentrism by implying that members of so-called primitive cultures are weak-minded. Though he insists that reality is not subject to interpretation, he fails to recognize that his own experiences as a white male in Western society influence his thoughts, actions and perceptions of the world.
Had he been cognizant of his own and other cultures, it is unlikely that he would have written so strong a denunciation of superstition, which forms the backbone -
