With all the Athens County precincts not reporting results, the race to represent Ohio's 92nd district in the state House of Representatives remained too close to call very early this morning.
Incumbent Jimmy Stewart, R-Athens, led Democratic challenger Debbie Phillips by about 3,500 votes at about 4 a.m. this morning. Stewart won Meigs, Morgan and Washington counties, but no results were reported in Athens County, which historically favors Democrats.
A problem with the machinery to count votes caused a delay in Athens County reporting. Officials were still tallying results at 4:15 a.m.
Stewart declined to comment at 2:40 a.m. because results were still pending. Phillips left the Blue Gator, where she was awaiting election results with other Athens County Democrats, close to 12:30 a.m. She and her campaign staff said they would wait to comment on results until all the regular and provisional ballots in Athens were counted.
