After one head coaching change, four weeks of practice and an exhibition game, the Ohio women's basketball team is ready for the games to start counting again.
The Bobcats kick off the 2006-07 regular season tomorrow night in The Convo when they host Navy.
Ohio needed a late rally to knock off Division II West Liberty State, 66-60, in an exhibition game Tuesday night, as the Bobcats struggled from the field, making 34 percent of their shots, including just under 19 percent from three-point range.
Those struggles, plus the strong inside presence of forward Domenica Silva, who led the 'Cats in scoring with 22 points, has coach Sylvia Crawley planning to continue to work the ball inside in case of more nights like Tuesday.
We are such a good shooting team that we rely on our outside shooting a lot
and (Tuesday night) exposed that for us Crawley said. We'll definitely put in a couple more (inside) sets.
Limited practice time ' the team began practicing Oct. 13 ' forced Crawley into being cautious and patient with installing new offensive and defensive schemes.
We have had 19 practices and when you think about it
that's not a lot of time to put in a whole offensive and defensive system
Crawley said. That's a lot of things to teach
especially when you have newcomers. We're making sure that they do get the few things we put in G
said guard Rachel Frederick, who had two steals against West Liberty State.
Guard Lauren Kohn said the team is getting comfortable playing a variety of defenses.
The coaches have faith in us
and we have confidence in ourselves to change up and play a number of different defenses to keep the other team on their toes and keep them guessing
Kohn said.
