Your Turn: Legislators can keep Ohio puppies out of the cold

Ohio's puppy mills, comply or shut down ' it's up to the legislature now!

Ohio holds a title no state would want ' the second largest puppy mill producing state in the county. It's a badge of shame, and our legislators can change that with one simple vote!

Nine hundred bills are pending in the Ohio Legislature and our senators and representatives have just 15 days to decide which one's pass and which ones fail.

While 99.9 percent of the bills affect people, there is one lone companion bill (Senate Bill 242 and House Bill 606) that could impact the lives of literally thousands of abused, neglected dogs and puppies in Ohio's shameful puppy mills.

Many of the mills have 100, 200 or 300 dogs, most in outdoor wire cages not protected from the freezing cold and wind of winter or scorching heat of summer.

This proposed legislation will set, for the first time, minimum standards for kennels operating in Ohio. It's simple: Comply or the state will shut you down.

So, in those final 15 days of session, I plan to let my legislators know that, while I know there is very important legislation to pass for the people of Ohio, it's not too much to ask that they pass one bill for the dogs and puppies who don't need to spend another winter outside.

I urge all Ohioans to contact their legislators and ask for them to support HB 606 and SB 242. For information on contacting legislators in a certain district, visit www.legislature.state.oh.us. If they don't hear from us, they'll move on to the other 899 Bills that await them.
