Bobcats rebound to take 2 from Mercyhurst during weekend

Dave Moyer knew he needed to step up in the absence of two of the Bobcats' top players. With two wrist-shot goals, Moyer did just that, leading Ohio to a 3-2 victory over Mercyhurst Saturday.

I thought we stepped up to the challenge well

Moyer said. We didn't have two of our key leaders out there and it was nice to get two wins on the board with both guys out of the lineup.

Coach Dan Morris challenged his team by resting right wing Paul Warriner and defenseman Jim Roach, who both had nagging injuries. The

Bobcats responded with a series sweep of the Lakers.

Our league schedule is really tough and we needed to rest some guys that were banged up Morris said. In that situation hopefully your depth will carry you through.

On Friday, the Bobcats struggled to convert offensively in the first two periods and found themselves in an early 2-0 hole. Ohio rebounded with three goals late in the second period, but Mercyhurst responded and tied the game less than four minutes into the third.

Two minutes later, left wing Brandon Hanley scored the game-winning goal to seal the 5-3 Bobcats' victory.

It is always good to get a win after losing the previous week

Hanley said. I know we out-shot them by a lot and it felt good to finally get one to go.

Left wing Clay LaBrosse led the Bobcats with two goals Friday, his first since returning from a broken toe, as Ohio out-shot Mercyhurst 58-25.

I had a couple chances to get on the board against Kent State and did not convert

LaBrosse said. It's nice to get back on the board and help out my team.

The Bobcats struggled to convert their early chances again Saturday and were knotted up with Mercyhurst 1-1 after two periods.

Moyer's two third-period goals ensured the victory for Ohio, along with key penalty kills in the closing minutes of the game.

It was an improvement throughout the game and our guys were tested

Morris said. Our guys got better in their penalty kills throughout the weekend.

Ohio also opted to rest top goalies Ryan Baksh and Chris Carlson, giving backup Derek DeFelice and red shirt Paul Marshall ice time.

Derek and Paul see pucks every day in practice

and they get rewarded for hard work

Morris said. They got two big wins in two tight games.
