As the rain in Athens begins to subside, many are hoping that Art Garfunkel's concert forms a much needed bridge over troubled water.
Garfunkel will sing live at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium tonight, giving listeners the chance to experience a rare performance from a musical and cultural legend
said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director at MemAud.
Garfunkel headlines Ohio University's Horizons Concert Series, a performance lineup that touches on a range of musical genres. The series has been well received and will most likely be continued in the future. Upcoming concerts will feature acclaimed Celtic fiddle player Natalie MacMaster and Livingston Taylor, the brother of James Taylor, Holzaepfel said.
The tour, which has Garfunkel appearing in larger cities such as Reno, Nev., and Paris, coincides with Garfunkel's forthcoming recording release, Some Enchanted Evening, to be released on Jan. 30.
When we booked the show in March [2006] we didn't know about the new album Holzaepfel said. We're thrilled to be a part of the tour.
Garfunkel was the harmonizing voice behind the success of the band Simon and Garfunkel. According to a press release, he, like Paul Simon, is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. After the legendary band parted in 1970, Garfunkel went on to perform as an actor and a poet while releasing solo albums such as Breakaway in 1975 and Watermark in 1978.
In the '80s and '90s, he came back to his roots, performing for audiences and singing for the love of it.
I'm a singer trying to get away with a lucky job
Garfunkel said in the press release. I try to soothe
to lift ' That's my life.
The draw for the concert has been widespread. Along with students' and local residents' interests, ticket orders have come from as far as Indiana and Pennsylvania, Holzaepfel said.
Tickets are still available for Garfunkel's show.
