Indoor Track & Field: 'Cats open indoor season in Akron

After a long winter break, coach Clay Calkins is ready to get his team on the track.

There is a seven week time period without our supervision so (the athletes) have to be self-motivated

Calkins said.

The Ohio women's cross-country team is coming off of a Mid-American Conference championship in the fall and Carime Reinhart said that is motivation for the team.

The girls feel a lot more confident with the MAC championship said Reinhart, a cross country runner who placed first in the women's 5k race at the MAC championships in the fall. We just have been blessed with an awesome season and we hope it continues.

Ohio will be joined by Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and host school Akron, which has won the past two Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.

Reinhart said that she does not feel Akron's past will intimidate the Bobcats.

Everyone is going to come into the meet with a positive attitude and everyone will give 110 percent

she said. It will be a great start off for the season.

Calkins said he agrees with Reinhart and despite Akron's success in the past they are a different team this year.

They had a lot of seniors graduated who will not be competing

he said. They are a strong contender each year

and they put together a fine team.

At the 2006 Skip Summerville Invite Akron's men and women won. Ohio's men and women came in second and fourth, respectively.

Calkins said he hopes the team will be able to improve on last year's performance.

It is competitive but at the same time it is good to jump back in with both feet

he said. It is a great facility and it is great to compete at Akron.
