If this weekend's long road trips to Youngstown State and Buffalo were supposed to affect the performances of Ohio, freshman Lindsay Hamilton didn't show it as she dove her way to a sweep of all of the diving competitions.
Both the women's and men's teams followed suit by sweeping their weekend meets. The women defeated Youngstown State on Friday 135-100 before they traveled to Buffalo to defeat the Bulls 140-91. The men edged Buffalo 124-117.
It's something that you have to get used to
Hamilton said of the long road trip. I think we got closer as a team. Getting closer outside the pool can only help you in it.
Hamilton led the way for the Bobcats, setting a career-high in the 1-meter (264.67) diving competition. She also won the 3-meter (276.61) diving competition as the women's team won nine of 13 events.
Junior Sigal Simsolo teamed up with freshmen Allison Schaefer, Caitlin Drozin and Heather McKenzie to win the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:53.74.
After their win over the Penguins, the Bobcats (7-2, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) won their first nine competitions against the Bulls on their way to winning 10 of 13 events.
Junior Emily Wylam, along with sophomores Karen Liddy, Ashley Marion and freshman Leah Giancarli, won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:56.72.
Wylam won her second event of the meet when she finished the 200-meter backstroke in 2:05.92.
Giancarli also took first place in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:06.26.
Hamilton starred on the boards once again, winning both the 1-meter (237.30) and the 3-meter (270.76) diving competitions.
Ilse Petersen, who won the 100-meter freestyle competition with a time of 53.57, said she thought the team's spirit helped contribute to the win during the long road trip.
It's really difficult to travel Petersen said. Our team had a lot more spirit and really got behind each other and I think that really helped.
The men (3-1, 1-1 MAC) won just five events and had a much tougher time with Buffalo as the meet came down to the last relay.
Ohio juniors Luke Herlehy and Cy Moser and sophomores Andrew Belton and Jim Bayne won the 400 freestyle relay by just .14 seconds to take the meet.
Herlehy also won the 1000 freestyle in a career-best time of 9:33.63 and the 500 freestyle in 4:43.88.
The other win came when sophomores Stephen D'Arrigo, Bobby Pampush, Brandon Stakleff and Bayne won the 400 medley relay (3:32.00).
Coach Greg Werner said he believes his team's hard work is starting to show in the pool, as well as on the bus rides home.
We're starting to come around after the holiday training. We are starting to see results
whether it be in the pool or on the boards
Werner said. It was a happy bus ride home.
