Ohio University is showcasing the influence of Martin Luther King Jr. through events for students and Athens residents on Monday.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday in Baker University Center Room 339, students and volunteers are participating in the service project Love Luggage
assembling suitcases for needy families. Donations for the suitcases still may be dropped off in the event's room.
The day's main event is a Gala Celebration in the Baker Ballroom at 6 p.m. Athens Mayor Ric Abel and OU President Roderick McDavis will speak and the event will feature a local choir, a choir from Hillel Jewish Center, and the OU Concert Choir.
The gala also will feature a presentation on the civil rights movement and a film, Man in the Street, that highlights different ethnic groups in Athens and the effect King had on their lives.
The celebration is free and open to the public. 17
